My new Work Tote!

October 6, 2013

So as i mentioned in a previous blog, I bought Lotta Jansdotter’s Simple Sewing book.  This is another one of her projects that she calls “All-Day Tote”  I’m calling it my work tote because that’s what I’ll be using this tote for.  Even though I used all her dimensions, I made some modifications that will work better purpose.

The tote, after completion is approximately 14″ wide x 10″ tall and 6″ deep.  I used her suggestion of choosing a thicker canvas type fabric since it will be used a lot.  I decided to chose a dark pattern, and something that could go with all my work outfits.  I’m a big fan of the vintage chic/ french modern country style hence the pattern you see.

What did i change?

  1. Lotta’s pattern had a large front side pocket for news papers etc, but I choose not to put one on since I don’t read the paper and I thought a side pocket wasn’t very practical to be honest.
  2. Lotta only had one side pocket for a water bottle, but I chose to have two, so i just added another one.
  3. I sewed an interface lining to all the panels to make it sturdier.
  4. and instead of folding the edges of the inside pocket in and then sewing it to the inside lining, I chose to line my inside pocket.  Since my lining was black, it’s hard to see, so I also picked a different pattern so that the pocket would be more visible to me.  I won’t be using this tote as a purse so it didn’t bother me that the lining pocket was visible.

Yes! the side pocket fits my thermos perfectly! I decided to add the additional pocket on the other side because it rains a lot in vancouver…so the other side will be for my small umbrella 🙂

If you look closely you’ll see my inside pocket and that it is a different patterned fabric.  I also made the two sides more equal in shape because I’m not quite sure what I’ll be using them for.

One thing I wish I had done… I wish I went with my gut to make the tote a bit taller and the straps long enough to be a shoulder tote…but I have lots of left over fabric..so maybe I’ll make a matching larger tote another day!

Happy Crafting everyone!

Baby Rei Lynn’s 1st Birthday Card – HSSSC169

September 29, 2013

Good evening everyone 🙂  It has definitely been a busy weekend!  Have I mentioned that I’m back in school?  Well, I am and it’s only part-time, but the assignment involved will take some time to complete!  Wish me luck! 🙂

Ok enough about me, back to some craftiness.  So today was my friend Joyce’s daughter’s 1st birthday!  She’s so cute! It’s been a while since I’ve made a child’s birthday card, so I needed some inspiration, and what better way to get inspired than from a card challenge 🙂  So I went to Hand Stamped Sentiments to see what’s happening there.  They had a card sketch challenge this week..

I kept things a little more simple, since time was a bit of an issue this weekend, but I think the card turned out pretty cute!  Especially since I’ve been sewing more than paper crafting lately…..(side note – I’ve been working on a big project the past couple of weeks! I’m hoping to get it done this week!)

I love blues…..it’s so bright a cheery! The whale stamp is actually from a retired stamp set from Stampin’ Up called Fox and Friends.  The banner is from Itty Bitty Banners, with matching die cut framelits for the Big Shot 🙂  It’s hard to see in my picture, but I also have a dazzling diamonds sparkle border around the white framelit so that it sparkles 🙂

This is the inside and the envelope!  The whale and small embellishments are also from another die cut by Stampin’ Up – Clearlits Happy Whale cute huh?

My Apron Sewing Project

September 17, 2013

So as you all may know.. I took up sewing this past year and I’ve completed all the projects that I’ve started.  The sewing projects have been fairly simple, and I’ve been made mistakes here and there, and I’ve learned from that too.

So, awhile back now, probably after christmas, I bought a sewing book that had patterns that I could use by Lotta Jansdotter: Simple Sewing.  There are a few projects in here that I would like to try, but the one that caught my eye first was an apron!  I mean, I already have aprons of my own, but I really wanted to make one and so I did…

Lotta has two apron patterns to learn from, one is a cafe apron that just wraps around your waste, and the other is a reversible full apron.  Her reversible apron didn’t have pockets, but her cafe apron had a mitt cutout pocket, so I decided that I wanted to add mitten pockets to my apron too!

I must say, they did turn out to be quite the hassle to sew.  The book tries to teach you how to fold the outer edges of the mitt over to sew, but that DID NOT work out for me.  So I ended up cutting out extra pieces and sewed them together, and now i have lined pockets! Which is even better! 🙂  I would say this is the HARDEST PART.

And TA DA! Here’s the end product! I must say.. I LOVE IT!

I love how it’s reversible! I also DOUBLED the length of the waist strap so that I can wrap it around the front and tie it in the back.  It makes the apron look more flattering I like 🙂  I know it took me time to make, but 3 metres of fabric and thread only cost about $20. so I think it was a STEAL!  I’ve seen how much modern aprons cost now a days and they’re not cheap! Especially the cute ones! 🙂

They’re actually a really good size apron because they also wrap around your waist for added clothing projection! When I finished this project i was SO PROUD of myself! lol I did NOT want to take it off!

Bridal Shower Card

September 11, 2013

So last month my cousin got married..and of course I made her a Bridal Shower card!  Her colours are pink, black and silver….and even though I didn’t use silver… I used one of the new colours Smoky Slate.  I think it turned out pretty good considering I threw together a few different elements…….. 🙂

This was the other side of the page……if you can’t read the poem…..”You know your in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams”

Father-in-laws Birthday Card

August 28, 2013

My father-in-laws birthday was actually quite a few months ago! lol  But I just haven’t had the time to post the card!  Needless to say…..here it is 🙂

IMG_2548

One thing I’ve learn is that you always have to decorate the envelope 🙂

IMG_2549

The stamp set i used was a sale-a-bration stamp set from 2012 called Feeling Sentimental

IMG_2550

This neat effect makes the bike look like it’s moving.  All you have need is a stamp-a-ma-jig and a few different shades of ink pads and away you go……

The banner is from the Itty Bitty Banners stamp set with matching framelits for the bigshot
